Adobe announced the End of Support for Magento Open Source and Adobe Commerce 2.3.x from September 8, 2022.
Magento 2.3 life-cycle started in November 2018 with the release of Magento 2.3.0. The 2.3 version of Magento and Adobe Commerce witnessed 7 major changes with Magento 2.3.7 released on May 11, 2021. However, with ample B2B and B2C features included in 2.4.x and the upcoming 2.5, Adobe is discontinuing the support for Magento 2.3.x. All the 2.3 versions will reach end-of-life in less than 2 months.
So, what does Magento 2.3.x mean for merchants? It may leave them wondering – what will happen after Magento 2.3 End-of-life? What can they expect or should they make the jump and upgrade to Magento 2.4.x or any other eCommerce platform before September?
Let’s dive into everything Magento store owners need to know about the Magento 2.3.x end of support!
EOL means that Adobe will no longer be working on any 2.3.x version of Magento and Adobe Commerce. There won’t be any updates, patches, or support for Magento 2.3.x which means no security patches and bugfixes as well as no PCI (Payment Card Industry) compliance updates.
This clearly intends that if your store is running on Magento or Adobe Commerce 2.3.x after end-of-life it would be on your risk. If there are any vulnerabilities, security flaws, bugs, or any other problem with the platform, there would be no official fixes. This may not seem a serious issue at first but over the weeks, and months, these problems will become more and more vulnerable to your eCommerce store.
Third-party extension vendors and developers who use the Magento Marketplace generally prioritize compatibility with the latest Magento versions. This means they will prioritize the latest Magento 2.4 and the upcoming Magento 2.5 for fixing bugs, adding features, improving stability, and more.
Moreover, extensions that offer compatibility with only unsupported versions – like Magento 2.3 – may get removed from the Marketplace. Unless you upgrade to the supported Magento version or any other platform, your significant extensions may not function properly, and there could be numerous issues to your eCommerce store.
Magneto 2.3 EOL not only means that the updates will stop but also there won’t be any support tickets filing for this version of the Magento Open Source and Adobe Commerce platform. If any problems occur to your eCommerce store running on Magento 2.3, it will be on its own and your technical team will have to resolve the issues without any help from the Magento dev team.
When any Magneto version becomes unsupported, Adobe removes developer documentation from their website. If your store starts having security issues and other vulnerabilities after Magento 2.3 EOL occurs in September 2022, it will become difficult to fix them.
Now that we have understand some of the things that will happen or issues that may appear once Magento 2.3.x reaches EOL, you might be wondering – why should you upgrade to Magento 2.4 right away?
The reasons are hundreds to make the switch. The most significant improvements that Magento 2.4 offers over Magento 2.3.x include better storefront and data security, BOPIS (Buy Online, Pickup In Store) support, enhanced media gallery with Adobe Stock integration, performance upgrades, B2B improvements, better PWA support, and many more.
The click is ticking! ioVista, an Adobe solutions partner can help streamline your platform migration from Magento 2.3.x to Magento 2.4 without any data loss and zero downtime.
