New leadership ushers in changes for Google+

It seems some changes are afoot at Google, specifically with its social network, Google+.

On Sunday, Bradley Horowitz, a longtime executive at Google announced that he is taking over leadership of Google’s social products – but he didn’t say Google+. Instead, his announcement mentioned “Photos and Streams.”

Then on Monday, in an interview with Forbes, Sundar Pichai, Google’s Senior VP of Products said that, “…increasingly you’ll see us focus on communications, photos and the Google+ stream as three important areas, rather than being thought of as one area.”

So, it sounds fairly certain that Google+ is planning on making some changes and splitting some of its components into separate products. One obvious comparison would be the way Facebook is integrated with the photo-sharing service, Instagram, yet they are two separate networks.

While these changes have not taken effect yet – and honestly, we still need much more information – if Google+ is a part of your social mix, you should keep it that way for the time being. There’s no indication that Google plans to scrap its social network altogether. It may not be as big as Facebook or Twitter but Google+ does have an audience and considering Google is the go-to search engine for most people, it’s wise to keep feeding your Google+ stream with information about your business and products.

Plus, as Bradley Horowitz said on his own Google+ page, “We’ve been working hard on these changes and I’m really excited about what these will mean for our users.” Perhaps there are great things in store for Google+ in the coming months. Either way, we will keep you posted as we learn more.
